What is "Meals on Wheels"?

Meals on Wheels is a volunteer service to deliver meals to homes of shut-ins.

How does it work?

Meals on Wheels is coordinated by Family Service and involves many drivers from churches and other groups who currently show up at the Illini Union Monday thru Friday about 10:30 AM to pick up a cooler of sacks containing milk and bread, and insulated containers with the day's hot meal. You may drive to 8 to 20 homes in the same general area, generally finish before noon. Some of the shut-ins pay for their meals, others are on public aid. Some are on the routes for years and others only for a temporary disability. The brief conversations you have are rewarding to the deliverer and especially to the shut in who may not see any other person that whole day.

How is Community UCC involved?

We at Community have delivered meals for many years, probably going on 30. You go in your own car with another person who does the "running" to the doors. We deliver 2 routes 3 times a year. Olive Garrigus has coordinated the Community effort for many, many years. Currently Pat Syoen, Jack & Helen Ritter, Jack & Sally Paxton, Curt & Jan Wilson, are doing most of the deliveries.

Right now we are short of drivers because we have recently lost some of our faithful deliverers such as Frieda & Ralph Washer, Margie & Ron Veach, Touby & Frances Kurtz, Rogers & Marj Harlan.
