Day Two – We Arrive in San Antonio

Brought to you by Emily Ward

We woke up early this morning – well most of us did – and had some breakfast in the hotel lobby. Two of us spilled our drinks, from the lack of sleep. We got reports that the boy’s room stayed up watching a Martin Lawrence Marathon and had massive pillow fights. The girls all fell asleep watching Funniest Home Videos.

The drive didn’t seem as terrible today, granted I slept for a good deal of the time. A bunch of us spent approximately four hours looking at David’s yearbook and analyzing every picture. I’ve always found that looking at yearbooks never gets old.

Around 3:30 p.m., we began to see the city, It only took about 45 minutes to find where we were suppose to go. (The chaperones promised they knew exactly where we were…) At about 4:15 p.m. we pulled into the church. After meeting Hugo, the program director, we brought  in all our luggage and set up our sleeping space. All the males sleep in the sanctuary (Jeff sleeps under a pew). The girls, however, are upstairs in the Sunday school class rooms. We are sharing our room with another chaperone (who happened to formally live in Champaign and even worked at Cunningham Children’s Home for a while) and two other girls from Missouri.

We met as a big group at 7:00 in the sanctuary and got to know each other a little bit. We went over the rules, learned the schedule for the week. Then we were allowed to have free time!

Due to a little time confusion, we had yet to eat dinner. Hugo recommended we try a place nearby called Taco Haven. And it was a haven. Since it was after 8:00, the place was pretty empty, except for a few people watching the NBA Finals on a huge screen TV (For those of you, like myself, who couldn’t care less about the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs are playing for the championship title.). The owner came over to greet us and thanked us for coming to his restaurant. We had a great time. First of all, the chips and salsa were amazing. Simply to die for. There meals were fabulous as well. I got chicken Flautas and ate every bite. Jess and Sam both completely cleaned their plates. El Toro, Margaritas and Fiesta Cafe will never be able to compare!

After devotionals on the front steps of the church, we all headed to bed. I think I can say for all of us that we are excited to start our projects tomorrow!
